Small saturation moment due to the crystalline electric field effect for $$T_h$$ site symmetry in the ferromagnet UFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$

Electrical resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements have been performed on the ferromagnet UFe$$_{4}$$P$$_{12}$$ with the cubic crystal structure. The ferromagnetic ordering at $$T_{rm C}$$,=,3.1 K, a small saturation moment of 1.3 $$mu_{rm B}$$/U, together with the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, are found to be well explained by considering the 5$$f^2$$ crystalline electric field schemes for $$T_{h}$$ site symmetry and the magnetic exchange interaction.

Resonant x-ray scattering study was carried out to investigate an anomalous ordered state ($$T_A$$ = 6.5 K) in the filled skutterudite PrFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$. At the Pr-$$L_{III}$$ absorption edge, we observed resonant features in $$h+k+l$$ = odd reflections, which are forbidden in the $$bcc$$ structure above $$T_A$$. Because these reflections contain the difference of anomalous scattering factor between two Pr atoms in the $$bcc$$ unit cell, and the ordered state is attributed to the ordering of two different electronic states of Pr.

The angular dependence of de Haas-van Alphen effect has been measured to reveal the electronic structure of filled skutterudite PrRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$. The angular dependence of de Haas-van Alphen frequency of PrRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$ is in good agreement with that of LaRu$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$. Compared with PrFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$, no anomalous enhancement of cyclotron effective mass has been observed in this system. This change of electronic structure is attributed to the difference in the $$c-f$$ hybridization strength, which is expected from the large difference in the lattice parameters.
